We are happy to announce about successful completion of the English Language week which was held at Polivskiy ETC this winter.

During the week there were numbers of lessons, discussions, games and competitions which gave pupils fun chances to use English and learn more about history, culture and life in English speaking countries.

Participants were engaged in half a dozen different listening tasks involving authentic recordings, super short snippets, stories, loop dictations, drawing, and movement.

WE were trying to search for some ideas for this year, and we thought the best way toget inspiredwas by looking at the activities in our previous English Weeks. After browsing through old albums ,we found some activities thatwethink welike to do again this year. These are some of them:

The solemn opening of the WEEK of ENGLISH.

This year it started with the presentation of the teacher of English Khomutov K.S. titled: “Unity in Diversity”

Children also enjoyed USA and UK TRIVIA GAME

It is the test of knowledge of the USA and UK in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Participants worked in small groups to demonstrate what they know about US and UK geography, history, and culture, and might even learn some new fun facts about these countries at the same time.

Very popular among pupils became game under the name of ”Amazing Race”

We divided students into several teams. The teams would have to look for envelopes containing clues hidden everywhere around the school. Each clue would lead the teams to different stations. The teams would have to perform the English language task given in every station before they could have access tothe clue that would lead them to the next station. The first team to arrive at the final station would be the winner.

“Win, Lose or Draw” is a game which many pupils considered as the most interesting.

This was also done in our previous English Week. Like the 'Amazing Race',this wasafter the popular TV game show by the same name. We wrote down some clues for the participants to draw. For the teachers, we gave some simple sentences like 'I like to play football' or 'She loves sandwich.' For the students, we used words - 'ball', 'elephant', 'pencil' etc. One person from the team would draw, while the rest would try to guess the sentence or the word. One point would be given for each correct guess. The winner was the team with the most points.

The Telephone Game

In this activity, we got the teams to sit in a line. Then, we would whisper a sentence or a phrase to the first person. The person would then whisper it to the next person, and the whispering would continue until it reached the last person in the line. The last person would then run to the desk at the back of the room and wrote whatever that was whispered to him/her on a piece of paper. Some of the results were hilarious!

“Come watch the movie and stay on for an after- screening discussion with your teacher”

Was an interesting event which provoked many interesting discussions.

Action Song

The children loved it too. We could see how talented our students were in action song.

There was opportunity to sing along, to learn new expressions and vocabulary, and to learn about culture of English speaking countries. There was joy in the faces of pupils. To me, that was all that matters.

In conclusion we have to say that ENGLISH WEEK provided pupils with a variety of communicative activities that encourage students to speak and to use the language concepts they are studying.
